There were some not great things (death of a cousin, bad leg infection that was resistant to antibiotics), but there were also good things (healthy kitties, friends get together, trip to see Marie Osmond with my bestie)</p><p>You can click on the photos to enlarge</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Her father, Southward, was 38 and her mother, Clarkey was 33. During the Civil War, her future husband, Jerimiah Trusdell was fighting for the North, and he was in Georgia and somehow met Georgia, how I wish I knew. But he fell in love with her and after the war, moved down to Georgia, married her and they settled in Alabama, where he was the town doctor.<p></p><p>Georgia's achievement was that she was blind. This was, no doubt, a big challenge in the 1800s. It is not known how she lost her sight...some research indicates she was born blind and other research says her blindness developed when she was a little older, but at any rate, it does appear she was most likely blind at least by the time she married.</p><p>She managed to have a good marriage, to a Yankee, which I am sure was an achievement in itself during that time, but she had 5 children and raised them, while working on a farm. </p><p>I wish I could sit down and talk to her and find out all the achievements she made during her life, those that she probably just accepted as normal life. She truly seemed to be an outstanding individual.</p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-33878225545005809652024-03-03T13:51:00.001-05:002024-03-10T14:09:08.737-04:0052 Ancestors - Week 10 - Language<p>This is a challenging topic for me. My first thought was to write about an ancestor that spoke a different language - other than my language of English. However, considering that my ancestors are 82% English, Irish or Scottish - well, that's a lot of English-speaking ancestors.</p><p>I do have some Norwegian and Danish ancestors and northern African ancestors, but I haven't really identified them, so I am sure they spoke different languages other than English.</p><p>So...the post this week, I'm afraid, is a bit boring.</p><p><br /></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-25280990122538256362024-03-02T07:18:00.001-05:002024-03-02T07:18:00.136-05:0052 Ancestors - Week 9 - Changing Names<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF5HFnkP1ecKfnLQy7ZTL1Q4BCH6hTFGqSrE2dqRjZli644rIEsb10yaaF9sIlUEtukJ-C-EIDmPIz285YEv18zJJuTnoOgOkicROyReuRQHlNrQvdACeX5mLwKLVWi3jOs_FmUp1ZHz-e-RraZ1mceY95_NdsZ7qaa-i8EtG06URpvjg6yCl8NM4I8Aw/s1712/f1cff479-d542-489e-8375-97ef63748916.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1712" data-original-width="1144" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF5HFnkP1ecKfnLQy7ZTL1Q4BCH6hTFGqSrE2dqRjZli644rIEsb10yaaF9sIlUEtukJ-C-EIDmPIz285YEv18zJJuTnoOgOkicROyReuRQHlNrQvdACeX5mLwKLVWi3jOs_FmUp1ZHz-e-RraZ1mceY95_NdsZ7qaa-i8EtG06URpvjg6yCl8NM4I8Aw/w268-h400/f1cff479-d542-489e-8375-97ef63748916.jpg" width="268" /></a></div><p>I always try to write about the first person or first thing that comes to mind when I received the #52Ancestors prompt.</p><p>This week, the first pers6n that came to mind was my mother.</p><p>My mother was born October 8, 1940, of course at home because you seldom had a baby in the hospital back then. She was promptly named Inell. </p><p>Well..a few days later, her aunt visited to see the new baby and was told "Here is little Inell" Her aunt took one look and said, "That's an awful name, from now on, her name is Mary Nell" and from then on, that was her name...although not legally. </p><p>She used "Mary Nell" on every official document...school paper, marriage license, social security card. I mean on official documents, they asked your name, and you told them, you didn't have to present a birth certificate because quite frankly, a lot of people didn't have them. She did though and it said "Inell"</p><p>When my mom was in her early 60s, she thought, you know...it might be a problem when I get ready to collect social security, so she went to the courthouse and legally had her name changed to "Mary Nell" instead of "Inell".</p><p>I have always been glad for that great Aunt changing my mom's name because I too believe that Mary Nell is a much better name and suits her better. </p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-17506895566456969002024-03-01T07:15:00.000-05:002024-03-01T07:15:00.147-05:0052 Ancestors - Week 8 - Heirlooms<p>Hmm....I cannot think of any family heirlooms at the moment. I'm not exactly sure where he was born but he was baptized in 1596 in Kent, England, as noted in the Tyler Index of Parish Registry (1538-1874)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9SY7fFqBS7tDEWXlD8k4qmJowLoGZdcT7p1VXrxEsgC1J2BvDhl2zOG-qzsI3KuasT7PdEhj75SBw2myvUvqPbvIfYOTGf4dk-cpmhPDvnYGaOhUONNhsjWdDhZXAhwMB48bG6jrtfmYRK4mP-xen8zQsofZdvqdhCIZdzmzpkVh3PlrmOyMPQHN5Js/s594/Capture2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="594" data-original-width="371" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9SY7fFqBS7tDEWXlD8k4qmJowLoGZdcT7p1VXrxEsgC1J2BvDhl2zOG-qzsI3KuasT7PdEhj75SBw2myvUvqPbvIfYOTGf4dk-cpmhPDvnYGaOhUONNhsjWdDhZXAhwMB48bG6jrtfmYRK4mP-xen8zQsofZdvqdhCIZdzmzpkVh3PlrmOyMPQHN5Js/w400-h640/Capture2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>According to the Passenger & Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s, he arrived in Virgina in 1617. He is actually the farthest Slaughter I have been able to go back to, which is pretty far, I must say. I haven't been able to properly identify his parents, although I did identify his wife, Catherine Finnis.</p><p>I am not 100% sure of his death date. Some of my research indicates 1620, but I have found a lot of evidence recently that he most like died during the Jamestown Massacre in 1622. However, other information indicates that his brother William actually died during the Massacre, perhaps both did? </p><p>At any rate, I'm so proud of my 10th great grandfather for leaving England and selling to Virginia, approximately 160 years before America became its own country and gained its independence from England.</p><p>It's incredible to believe that my ancestors and family have been on this land for that long!! It kind of blows my mind when I think about it.</p><p><br /></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-81051289695867942862024-02-28T04:20:00.006-05:002024-02-28T04:20:00.147-05:0052 Ancestors - Week 6 - Earning a Living<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Wzh-KaEuXtmU3giw_STdHmIoFtedrp4L0ttT1Mu5f0G-ZWf92bONxOVNnS2P7dxCmBKIJmxxWXoL-KKfUBBCsimpdAMDM5kFFA21x3pDwQGuVutGlmT_WP9wrXWenqUkGAcxYexDzz56anPVGBb-wseFUIw2YCBL4XO8Bolk8LngHSUQZs7Bh6_dNCQ/s1458/R.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1180" data-original-width="1458" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Wzh-KaEuXtmU3giw_STdHmIoFtedrp4L0ttT1Mu5f0G-ZWf92bONxOVNnS2P7dxCmBKIJmxxWXoL-KKfUBBCsimpdAMDM5kFFA21x3pDwQGuVutGlmT_WP9wrXWenqUkGAcxYexDzz56anPVGBb-wseFUIw2YCBL4XO8Bolk8LngHSUQZs7Bh6_dNCQ/w400-h324/R.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div>The timing of this particular week is rather perfect. I just so happened upon an article about my great-uncle James Monroe Slaughter, who was known by Monroe. This article discussed how he earned his living, along with my cousin's grandfather, Fletcher Ward, Sr.<div><br /></div><div>It seems my great uncle and my cousin's grandfather had a nice, little moonshine business going on. This really wasn't a surprise to me, as my dad had told me about how his Uncle Monroe, as well as his daddy, my grandfather had both spent time in prison for moonshining. It seems to have been quite a family business...I am SO glad my dad chose a different path and never went down that road.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, I know that not only my grandfather and some great uncles were in the business of moonshining, so was my dad's mom - my grandma. This was way before I came along. But my daddy would say she'd stand on the back porch and sell the moonshine. Often pocketing and hiding some of the money from her husband. </div><div><br /></div><div>I guess back then, it was easier for them to take a chance of earning a living by making moonshine than spending all day out in the hot Florida sun farming.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik-hUGJpsx0BYOr0sxCKhEsjtggY5HnbGlPkfDK-62ABM2rqk6IqCH8mF08jYIHz1Am3rfyKFInnyuwpGTX3FWDVW97rUkwxPP2j8x-23HWagEyPAhKINlTfRZIp7F-HAMFN87bPaJwly8-jpESdbrDWEIZrb5lR8r2rDIntL5fRiS3WEPsUGkqDgqjWI/s467/Capture.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="467" data-original-width="306" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik-hUGJpsx0BYOr0sxCKhEsjtggY5HnbGlPkfDK-62ABM2rqk6IqCH8mF08jYIHz1Am3rfyKFInnyuwpGTX3FWDVW97rUkwxPP2j8x-23HWagEyPAhKINlTfRZIp7F-HAMFN87bPaJwly8-jpESdbrDWEIZrb5lR8r2rDIntL5fRiS3WEPsUGkqDgqjWI/w420-h640/Capture.JPG" width="420" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-85293132647833289062024-02-27T15:59:00.001-05:002024-02-27T15:59:00.142-05:0052 Ancestors - Week 5 - Influencer<p>I have gotten a little behind in my 52 Week Ancestor project. Surprise, surprise, right?</p><p>So I am going to try to catch up this week by posting one a day.</p><p>So this week's prompt is "Influencer"</p><p>This one is a little tough for me, but I guess the first person that comes to my mind is my maternal grandmother, Jewel Cassada Mims.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZL0hgSSPTL_expJnIXpVc4hdqU-ULtruHrec9wGJztg55ycmwxNaoytrn_edvgUmYSnEdWOSH7jUP3fEPzU3AqmQ2bUU838W0RwJqHfqCAGLJyuPTrsSH60WV30vIWeUxPxQme8b4maRQSohKmxhcmYSVSTlyLAcMqxWV1Oqp2bCzlVjRBkmJ_0r3pPw/s1677/c825bef3-3d39-49eb-8a0c-a0d85e67736f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1116" data-original-width="1677" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZL0hgSSPTL_expJnIXpVc4hdqU-ULtruHrec9wGJztg55ycmwxNaoytrn_edvgUmYSnEdWOSH7jUP3fEPzU3AqmQ2bUU838W0RwJqHfqCAGLJyuPTrsSH60WV30vIWeUxPxQme8b4maRQSohKmxhcmYSVSTlyLAcMqxWV1Oqp2bCzlVjRBkmJ_0r3pPw/w400-h266/c825bef3-3d39-49eb-8a0c-a0d85e67736f.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My grandmother influenced, not only her 6 girls, but also her 18 grandchildren. Saturday, I attended the memorial service of my first cousin and while there, I was looking around the room at all of my grandmother's dependents...I mean so, so many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and even great-great-great grandchildren...It reminded me of Kind David and how God told him that he would have as so many decedents that they'd be as countless as the stars!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I bet my grandmother would have never known how many stars she would leave behind and it made me happy thinking of this, to think how a little part of her will live on and on and how so many of my cousins and 2nd cousins and all the little children running around were all there because of this wonderful lady. If you don't know, when you are knitting or crocheting a shawl for someone who needs prayer, you are praying over the shawl as you make it. I always pray when I pick it up to work on it, when I set it down to pause from working on it and about every 10 rows. So I am praying for the recipient of the shawl the whole time I am making it.</p><p>Often, when you are making a prayer shawl, you know who you are going to give it to and can be more specific during your prayers. However, we have a general prayer shawl ministry at our church, so I don't know who will end up with my shawl, so I just pray for healing, be it emotional, physical or both.</p><p>I had never worked with this yarn before,<a href="https://www.lionbrand.com/products/scarfie-yarn" target="_blank"> Lion Brand Scarfie</a>, but I really liked it, it was so soft and the color was just lovely. It wasn't a color (Charcoal/Aqua) I probably would have normally picked, but it was on clearance and with my Michael's rewards coupon, I got it for free! I wish you could feel how soft and squishy it is.</p><p>I used a pattern simply called "<a href="https://www.lionbrand.com/collections/crochet-patterns/products/shell-shawl-crochet" target="_blank">Shell Shawl</a>" and it basically was a 2 row repeat of shells and v-stitches. It was a fun pattern, simple but not boring and I liked how quickly it worked up (that is when there wasn't a kitty cat wanting attention instead).</p><p><br /></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-10895069071839289692024-02-04T17:26:00.002-05:002024-02-23T17:52:35.458-05:00Project Life - January 2024<p>After I had already downloaded these from the Project Life App, I went back and changed the border of the page, I guess you can see that next month.</p><p>I decided to keep it super simple this year and I made a template that has the week number and the days of the week - simple and easy. I am happy with the look.</p><p>So...this month I did some thing very unusual...I went to a Star Wars Burlesque show! It was weird but so fun! We had a blast! </p><p>Also, the Indigo Girls did a benefit show and we went to that too. The show was so good, even though the venue was Standing Room Only - ugh!</p><p>Also...I saw Hamilton again - it was technically in February, but part of Week 5 so it's included here - what a fantastic show! </p><p>You can click on the photo to enlarge.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Wednesday<p>It has been a while since I posted one of these. That doesn't mean I haven't been knitting or crocheting though.</p><p>Anyway...I had a Michael's rewards coupon ($10) that was about to expire. Well, I wasn't going to let that happen, so I went to Michael's to find something for around $10. I lucked out! I found 2 skeins of Lion Brand Scarfie yarn on clearance for $5 each. I thought it would make a nice prayer shawl, so I got them both, for free! You can't ask for anything much better than that.</p><p>I found a nice Shell Scarf shawl on Lion Brand's website and while my kitties were sleeping, I was able to get started on it.</p><p>I like this yarn a lot, it is super soft and I like the color changes. I wouldn't have necessarily chosen this color, but I am glad it was what was available, because the shawl is coming out nicely.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZhRvn23yqoJLG7PWJz_ikxY5O27OurcLQaAndyaROghsAQTBYO-fiRdnfTUfi_G0jQbv89X28xJh4nL8ljC9pJhUjqiUX7v5I-PJqjfs59lg-YFfKOKsamdyM3MvSTuaiy6Cwe1DuKZPaYvI7uO3N1J0ALSC-VXMRtVxjiDtNJzlFz83UPoxOsnuuKBg/s4032/IMG_5553.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZhRvn23yqoJLG7PWJz_ikxY5O27OurcLQaAndyaROghsAQTBYO-fiRdnfTUfi_G0jQbv89X28xJh4nL8ljC9pJhUjqiUX7v5I-PJqjfs59lg-YFfKOKsamdyM3MvSTuaiy6Cwe1DuKZPaYvI7uO3N1J0ALSC-VXMRtVxjiDtNJzlFz83UPoxOsnuuKBg/w640-h480/IMG_5553.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-91924299050536964512024-01-22T15:00:00.009-05:002024-01-22T15:00:00.133-05:00Taqueria del Sol's Chicken Enchiladas Suizas<p>This recipe was printed in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on September 3, 2020.</p><p>Click on image to enlarge.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs1K9d5gq0GEtN0s4kJbdxZckFQAgBYXZzXaPL-39WRz-pxnAyQ9usYUrynBJ_cuDHn7ya-z7vJxCLgfL0lwf5rsQBYicaXMtbUFpWGw_AZb33dtU07dbIgjuthe2nYAyFztpK-URdmxAVLA5ODZb1BH6D_o3XB7837Iobpr-pVfdR0Q0ojo1NkNmIVKA/s3300/The_Atlanta_Constitution_Thu__Sep_3__2020_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2136" data-original-width="3300" height="414" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs1K9d5gq0GEtN0s4kJbdxZckFQAgBYXZzXaPL-39WRz-pxnAyQ9usYUrynBJ_cuDHn7ya-z7vJxCLgfL0lwf5rsQBYicaXMtbUFpWGw_AZb33dtU07dbIgjuthe2nYAyFztpK-URdmxAVLA5ODZb1BH6D_o3XB7837Iobpr-pVfdR0Q0ojo1NkNmIVKA/w640-h414/The_Atlanta_Constitution_Thu__Sep_3__2020_.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-86283162044303220182024-01-21T07:13:00.015-05:002024-01-21T07:13:00.311-05:0052 Ancestors - Week 4 - Witness to HistoryI have a lot of ancestors that were witness to history...so many involved in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, one that was the sister-in-law of Henry VIII and so much more! <div><br /></div><div>However, I decided to write about Thomas Rogers. Thomas Rogers is my 11th great-grandfather and he witnessed history by traveling to America on The Mayflower!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thomas is listed on the passenger list, along with his son, Joseph, who was 12 at the time. This week's prompt is "Favorite Photo". THAT IS HARD! I love all my photos, it is difficult to narrow it down to just one.</p><p>But...I decided to pick this one.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieGK1zg16de_96aQEH4PFF6NiSeNxKV-Z4v98w-GjJtZlIUoHlH4sy3sHOcfnnb7SZC6Fs1jRfXzXGZvSxjnAzu4GSvWtPU1xhq9ch7x26JTPgfTuLH63vqC7HYiZo_vHLcZg7s4S88EJMZgd4glnB-DMHtaH6HCwAt7jgSZNqApigFbhiXFiIAKeGIvw/s711/ae2c28b8-3d7d-4b5b-a767-8df82f34a286.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="711" data-original-width="626" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieGK1zg16de_96aQEH4PFF6NiSeNxKV-Z4v98w-GjJtZlIUoHlH4sy3sHOcfnnb7SZC6Fs1jRfXzXGZvSxjnAzu4GSvWtPU1xhq9ch7x26JTPgfTuLH63vqC7HYiZo_vHLcZg7s4S88EJMZgd4glnB-DMHtaH6HCwAt7jgSZNqApigFbhiXFiIAKeGIvw/w353-h400/ae2c28b8-3d7d-4b5b-a767-8df82f34a286.jpg" width="353" /></a></div><br /><p>The reason I chose this one as a favorite is because it is a rare photo of taken in the late 1800s of my maternal great grandparents and 4 of their 5 children. The very tall man on the right is my third great grandfather, Jeremiah Sidney Truesdell. The lady in the middle with her arms folded is my third great grandmother, Georgia A. Segars Truesdell. The lady standing beside her, with the long ribbon on her dress, is my great-great grandmother, Frances. </p><p>So...my grandmother use to tell this story that her great grandfather came "from somewhere over the water" in a horse and buggy and married her blind great grandmother and he was a doctor of some kind.</p><p>Well...part of that was true. I discovered that J.S. Truesdell was born in Cattaraugus, New York. At some point, his family moved to Michigan. When he was 25, he was in the Civil War, serving in the Navy on the Union side. Of course, a great deal of the fighting took place in Georgia. While serving in Georgia, he somehow met Georgia A. Seagars, (Some info I found said her middle name was "America" but I haven't been able to validate that. </p><p>So, just before the end of the Civil War, he did get on a horse and buggy (which was the main means of travel for the average person at that time) and he rode it down to Georgia to marry her. They married in St. Andrews, Florida (which is near Panama City Beach) and they settled in Daleville, Alabama (just above the Florida panhandle border). </p><p>He was indeed a medical doctor. His wife, Georgia, was blind, but I haven't been able to find out if she was born blind or her blindness developed later in life. </p><p>So...some of the story, a good deal of it, was true...he just didn't come from Europe, as my grandmother thought.</p><p><br /></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-54670762227875247312024-01-10T14:49:00.005-05:002024-01-10T14:59:36.308-05:002024 52 Ancestors - Week 2: Origins<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRZSVGpt_8_xseOxl2T8DSVUHPsiJzuKDybOV1icj6laBYQhckgLWp5kugPVslLfw8_2klTi9ctVwZqDDrRlLfrVWDND-bSuaLQ7IvzUfu5hWc8hzY2fobWwOj7Ts370PEMGWXv6zyHx4r9JXOLsjIEaAOm7o-j0vfLwmgnJRFy4SkH_Xjj4dP75UM17Q/s310/Slaughter-England.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="310" data-original-width="250" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRZSVGpt_8_xseOxl2T8DSVUHPsiJzuKDybOV1icj6laBYQhckgLWp5kugPVslLfw8_2klTi9ctVwZqDDrRlLfrVWDND-bSuaLQ7IvzUfu5hWc8hzY2fobWwOj7Ts370PEMGWXv6zyHx4r9JXOLsjIEaAOm7o-j0vfLwmgnJRFy4SkH_Xjj4dP75UM17Q/w323-h400/Slaughter-England.jpg" width="323" /></a></div><br /><p><span style="font-family: inherit;">There are so many things I can think of for the <a href="https://www.amyjohnsoncrow.com/52-ancestors-in-52-weeks-themes-for-2024/" target="_blank">#52Ancestors</a> prompt of "Origins", but I typically think it is best to write about the first thing that comes to mind. For me, that was the Origin of my last name, Slaughter.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit;">Slaughter isn't an especially common last name and I love that. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Slaughter ranked at #1,295 in terms of most common U.S. surnames. Needless to say, I wasn't very diligent in keeping it up, so I am going to try to give it another go this year.</p><p>Week 1's Prompt is "Family Lore"</p><p>The first story that popped into my head is the story about my paternal great-grandmother, Dora Donahue Thomas (1884 - 1951).</p><p>Dora was my father's maternal grandmother. </p><p>As it goes, when Dora was very young, her parents, who were both \Indigenous People (some say Cherokee and some say Seminole, so it is unsure). They had to leave their land were made to go to the Oklahoma Indian Territory, at the time. They wanted Dora to have a good life so they asked a local doctor to take her. </p><p>The doctor, E.P. Webb and his wife agreed. Dora lived with them the rest of her life and never saw any of her biological family again. </p><p>I never knew how much of this was true but my research shows me that it does appear to indeed be the case and several other relatives (who've I only met through my research and were on different family lines) had told me the same story.</p><p>I've never been able to find any birth records for her but that isn't entirely uncommon in 1884 and certainly isn't uncommon for Indigenous People.</p><p>My dad remembered that she had very long hair that went to her ankles and she wore it back in a bun.</p><p>I do wish I could find out more about her, but sadly, I think I found the end of the family line when it comes to here. </p><p>She is buried, along with my great-grandfather, James William Thomas, in Campground Cemetery in Holmes County, Florida</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3hJX0DhHgZ-WMpjK0UNWAqoqk4jpdJD3yb-FQNoaRODRwjNzjCnPljUx150igtRRkFqBJnq7gsfUxUAu7iyrIubR8PNwewGqIkGUuxXiaY4uQ9ce-L70cjHxH32tbVrUPK9ea5p1Y5cyaJNu9c7KT_FTcsa4gJ8qzfW7PKKFhDRzyB0UKbo10sN-0hP4/s4000/a86c34cc-e44e-4b71-857f-167f5e4051c6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3hJX0DhHgZ-WMpjK0UNWAqoqk4jpdJD3yb-FQNoaRODRwjNzjCnPljUx150igtRRkFqBJnq7gsfUxUAu7iyrIubR8PNwewGqIkGUuxXiaY4uQ9ce-L70cjHxH32tbVrUPK9ea5p1Y5cyaJNu9c7KT_FTcsa4gJ8qzfW7PKKFhDRzyB0UKbo10sN-0hP4/w400-h300/a86c34cc-e44e-4b71-857f-167f5e4051c6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-41059302033279151782024-01-03T13:47:00.001-05:002024-01-06T14:11:48.685-05:002023 Year in Books<p><br />2023 was apparently my year for re-reading books. I decided to re-read the Harry Potter series. The first book, I finished in a couple of days, but boy, that last book was a LOT longer than the first one and it took me a while to finish it. I also re-read "The Firm" because a sequel is out (next on my list after I finish my current book that reading).</p><p>I see so many of my scrapbooking friends books and boy, they read a LOT more than I do...One of them read (or listened to) over 800 books!! Many read 100 or more. I can't ever see me reading (or listening to) that many books in a year. In fact, I hit a record this year with 25. That is a lot for me! I can't imagine how you get through 800 books a year, they must be super short books or you are reading/listening practically all day long. I would love to read 30 books this year, but set my goal at a realistic 15.</p><p>Click on photo to enlarge</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI2lq2MYJaOwSQapNnrELl6N2yJ6VemISfwvnkHhql5FYozZ6vV-CoiZa-XzFS1nanp6PaSrq8csC3ONFoJ-hf8L_RBUxNcxIbN892Fko0igOP61JxSkn_nO5cHiJrY10bg0nQhd6MQQTR914WK8XpIqga6CBc1YOzp9tvp6ZDiSCDFNOtF-Uhxl6lkz8/s584/Capture.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="368" data-original-width="584" height="404" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI2lq2MYJaOwSQapNnrELl6N2yJ6VemISfwvnkHhql5FYozZ6vV-CoiZa-XzFS1nanp6PaSrq8csC3ONFoJ-hf8L_RBUxNcxIbN892Fko0igOP61JxSkn_nO5cHiJrY10bg0nQhd6MQQTR914WK8XpIqga6CBc1YOzp9tvp6ZDiSCDFNOtF-Uhxl6lkz8/w640-h404/Capture.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7tJ6cNCdxQOl6ARgAQSCQmdntFAE-6KZkaunxEBCrvLPVyOFrWTS_nV9TAtByORNpytw6hSZOBimyFpWxBC2dVYz-S-NpZGvsK2U1EIQFAtyBrSqPXn-bFq1JiNhd4yROyM_jFLUfi26L8HwgWn9AVJacaDO4Vv1O6qq2NezV2GhusaeqeRjcBtl5Z3g/s3600/IMG_4406.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1807" data-original-width="3600" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7tJ6cNCdxQOl6ARgAQSCQmdntFAE-6KZkaunxEBCrvLPVyOFrWTS_nV9TAtByORNpytw6hSZOBimyFpWxBC2dVYz-S-NpZGvsK2U1EIQFAtyBrSqPXn-bFq1JiNhd4yROyM_jFLUfi26L8HwgWn9AVJacaDO4Vv1O6qq2NezV2GhusaeqeRjcBtl5Z3g/w640-h322/IMG_4406.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1yakmWJOdHuw61dcWnKeWtVUE2tLFw3pLKoTOLyWT8S7GHHWiTFf5SDYtCfBsCwlgtr1s1biYQd1qexi1zcDtmajJhzrP8vz2Vk2t63S9xQHvqjA0XnsriXCshsS50uywKUOmrSoZl85rvl2HKzf-EQHiYDndXVsGs_SP7-76ptXgkGoxCO2qSJMjwS8/s3600/IMG_4406a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1804" data-original-width="3600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1yakmWJOdHuw61dcWnKeWtVUE2tLFw3pLKoTOLyWT8S7GHHWiTFf5SDYtCfBsCwlgtr1s1biYQd1qexi1zcDtmajJhzrP8vz2Vk2t63S9xQHvqjA0XnsriXCshsS50uywKUOmrSoZl85rvl2HKzf-EQHiYDndXVsGs_SP7-76ptXgkGoxCO2qSJMjwS8/w640-h320/IMG_4406a.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHzqli7eZQrbUkc2gm4ZU6B0MVDWW2g38yVYw0s0l7ELDH56Fzy0GfDcoO2jwUJdMKbkYShdENwEgHCy-StrnzBXXWKmLG8oOd9fDlMRYneyUQPirOsVZy4lvELfr7bAsuDCL5hbXqZXvjwyaarxpxKSJbU7sMj2i5QA_q6K3I5htRqRlNinVXPenyFns/s1849/IMG_4405.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1836" data-original-width="1849" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHzqli7eZQrbUkc2gm4ZU6B0MVDWW2g38yVYw0s0l7ELDH56Fzy0GfDcoO2jwUJdMKbkYShdENwEgHCy-StrnzBXXWKmLG8oOd9fDlMRYneyUQPirOsVZy4lvELfr7bAsuDCL5hbXqZXvjwyaarxpxKSJbU7sMj2i5QA_q6K3I5htRqRlNinVXPenyFns/w640-h636/IMG_4405.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-5745841847765466832024-01-02T13:27:00.001-05:002024-01-06T13:41:42.957-05:00December 2023 Project LifeThe holidays are not easy for everyone. Christmas and New Years are difficult for me since my dad and brother passed. My dad was in the hospital from Oct 31st until Jan 13th. His birthday in Jan 16th. My brother passed on Oct 29th and his birthday was Jan 1st, so the holidays just feel empty. This year I tried to focus on the blessing in my life. It helped a bit. I know my dad and brother wouldn't want us sulking, but it is hard to sit around the holiday table when they are missing from it. <div><br /></div><div>Our family is small, but Christmas dinner use to have my parents, my 2 siblings, my sister-in-law, neice, her husband and now she has a daughter. Now, usually it is my mom and I having dinner together. Dad and Billy are no longer with us. My sister usually stays home to take care of the pets (which I am so grateful for). My sister-in-law is in Minnesota and my niece and her family are in New Zealand. It's hard sometimes...but I am so grateful for my family, even though we can't always be together and what an incredible blessing that I can spend Christmas with my mother!!! My friend Susan was able to join us this year for Christmas too, so that was nice. </div><div><br /></div><div>Bittersweet moment this month: My beloved dentist and his assistant retired.</div><div><br /></div><div>A highlight this month...my friend's daughter got married!! Here are my November 2023 Project Life pages.</p><p>A big highlight of the month was that I got to meet Micky Dolenz of the MONKEES!! I've been a Monkees fan as long as a I can remember, so practically my entire life! I did have an interaction with Micky, Davy and Peter once at the Hotel Rivinia in Atlanta, but I wouldn't exactly call that a "meeting". I saw them in person and they signed a few things for fans. Of course, I've seen them several times in concert, but unfortunately never all four at the same time. I saw Davy, Peter and Micky 4 times and I saw Micky and Mike once (a few months before Mike passed). </p><p>It is a bit sad that all of them, except for Micky, are gone now. </p><p>Another part of the hightlight of meeting Micky, 3 members of R.E.M. were also there, since Micky was promoting his new album, "Dolenz Sings R.E.M." - Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Bill Berry were all there. At one point I turned around and Michael Stipe was literally standing right behind me. It was a fun day.</p><p>You can click on the photos to see a larger view.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQMrQ02tvhK7Qo5wPpdBqMzw4CnMdZnbGgMjGbUv1nC273WKywwu6exhpMMIudov7i8zc3u6prrnJ0YALm6_vKehNNpCBZ_IabZRk-WDIKq-bBuF_pUs_gl1i7mVS-zEvz0iy3ulASb8igFozyOaCK4_pbkv-ESBmsXh6N_jnNWYRGERfTY9FM2__r_iE/s3600/IMG_4393.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I visited Summerville, GA twice and made 2 different birthday cakes for my Summerville friends that were having birthdays. I was born on my mom's birthday, so I went to FL to spend some time with her. I managed to do a little bit of painting and saw MJ: The Musical. The Broadway show was the first in a series, my sister bought me the entire series as a retirement present. The gift that keeps on giving. I love it!</p><p><br /></p><p>Click on the photos to enlarge.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf6Knjv5LYVrWGtlf5plab_SzbGx9LevKKeBZzpsNzA7Bdv6vFO1nE9U9qu8PWvdCn9Coh9NQODh7ki_WhNQv0aAwT94EskGVdstQjAK3Ws8FSPP7lf_b57kqgp-n-W3cSW3o7JY7oQOgeg9XIXHQvvSHXLIHmptigpjcjedGkBDQ1A3GhFUVjYE5Clhw/s3600/Oct%201-8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1800" data-original-width="3600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf6Knjv5LYVrWGtlf5plab_SzbGx9LevKKeBZzpsNzA7Bdv6vFO1nE9U9qu8PWvdCn9Coh9NQODh7ki_WhNQv0aAwT94EskGVdstQjAK3Ws8FSPP7lf_b57kqgp-n-W3cSW3o7JY7oQOgeg9XIXHQvvSHXLIHmptigpjcjedGkBDQ1A3GhFUVjYE5Clhw/w640-h320/Oct%201-8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4WTK5KH8eKmcxzky86hQeyO6YIvAT-zLMw4aWGkyyyIF821wDjV2ZOIWl7X5ERmR_VheAJa4G7M6WynpGDnCYgY9LjZEcm2ozpDU3N8LKIqp6pFz5G8Xjeafir9NHinwCnbxiNTYgJJWI3FuZsXAJMUaLeNN_2u5q_EOoJTYU-wKFbW7NZtqwJWHzVW0/s3600/Oct%208-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1802" data-original-width="3600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4WTK5KH8eKmcxzky86hQeyO6YIvAT-zLMw4aWGkyyyIF821wDjV2ZOIWl7X5ERmR_VheAJa4G7M6WynpGDnCYgY9LjZEcm2ozpDU3N8LKIqp6pFz5G8Xjeafir9NHinwCnbxiNTYgJJWI3FuZsXAJMUaLeNN_2u5q_EOoJTYU-wKFbW7NZtqwJWHzVW0/w640-h320/Oct%208-14.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUSpL_PUDyLhxVziJ3PkpfU4Inva26c7wSWoWgWJxhY9bxTyN4h-uHbM2aQl_80Qj5sb96OnHUA1fvJU9WtYy82rLuwVN191Ve4_UHNutDtYuR2-KMnwd6LU3RffJTrXo7WEFWicnkpkD8ZH8u3e1n8fh53CPyC1mALOkrvYdScrnCez_aDFqFnmvDk2E/s3600/Oct%2015-21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1789" data-original-width="3600" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUSpL_PUDyLhxVziJ3PkpfU4Inva26c7wSWoWgWJxhY9bxTyN4h-uHbM2aQl_80Qj5sb96OnHUA1fvJU9WtYy82rLuwVN191Ve4_UHNutDtYuR2-KMnwd6LU3RffJTrXo7WEFWicnkpkD8ZH8u3e1n8fh53CPyC1mALOkrvYdScrnCez_aDFqFnmvDk2E/w640-h318/Oct%2015-21.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoh_NxMCPk35WZ5WplZyGCTXGrjeLpzhyUxziEQWKYwA_9CnF5BSdyR5WdtB9O-e-YTyfpIfUcIQx1TSXlcGilYej7XzEhi0xNw0DgZrziZVEzeZIsXwHdyujw6HUWBOlj5RyYj_7s27sjVHpTipwoQWR4vA_N9jYvTaDHcrw7mxJjkH_kLMCoCxcxsGo/s3600/Oct%2022-28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1778" data-original-width="3600" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoh_NxMCPk35WZ5WplZyGCTXGrjeLpzhyUxziEQWKYwA_9CnF5BSdyR5WdtB9O-e-YTyfpIfUcIQx1TSXlcGilYej7XzEhi0xNw0DgZrziZVEzeZIsXwHdyujw6HUWBOlj5RyYj_7s27sjVHpTipwoQWR4vA_N9jYvTaDHcrw7mxJjkH_kLMCoCxcxsGo/w640-h316/Oct%2022-28.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br />Disneypalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17564104426996634705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6837160266978036288.post-23614047619702906252023-10-01T12:08:00.001-04:002023-11-06T13:11:14.945-05:00September 2023 Project Life<p> September was still a warm month, and I am about ready for some cooler temperatures. A major life change - I RETIRED !!! I could have retired 5 years ago will full benefits, but I just wasn't ready and honestly, I enjoyed my job (for the most part) and the people I worked with. But I finally took the plunge after a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of prayer. </p><p>I traveled a lot too - I was in 8 different states this month! I visited mom, and my friend Susan and I took a trip to Graceland, but decided to see a few other things while we were out, we stopped by the National Quilt Musuem and Laura Ingalls and Almonzo Wilder's home. That was so cool! I would love to travel out that way again. There was so much to see and we since so much was kind of "on the spur of the moment", we didn't really get to spend as much time as I would have liked in some of the places we visited. We had really planned for Graceland and boy, we had a blast!</p><p>We had record heat this month - whew!! The highest day, was 106<span style="background-color: white; color: #71777d; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #71777d; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">°</span> F. I just don't tolerate heat very well, but it was worth it. </p><p>Click on the photos to enlarge. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfDIKGTaL5dZluhT_LH5oFnayyM-qx-IbgehcfGAqeAXKDw3ZJmDMFjwv7ZVBAfPKfFlD8e_sixnK7hyphenhyphenuc0E36RfwURRlKtMhjrmy1lYJ7DUGneJjCT4QlhS0IQU-yLuoaE11mdY2JYOUG-bPSDR-9F1vGL6S5t88ymjnUloXW5B6RTczRBi6HflN-AeY/s3600/Jul%2030-Aug%205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;
