Product Placement in TV Shows

I remember when Guiding Light was close to going off the air and they would have in your face product placement.  I think they were having lots of financial issues and was doing anything to stay on the air (wish it worked).  Sometimes it wasn’t too in your face…for instance, they would get home from the store and un-bag their groceries…the Gain, Cascade, Dawn and Head & Shoulders would be carefully removed one by one and face the camera so you could clearly see what it was.  Other times, they would make a fuss over a product. . . On a car trip with 2 in the front seat and 2 in the back…”Are those PRINGLES? I love “PRINGLES”…Ross, hand me those PRINGLES, PRINGLES are my favorite chips!” Ross replies “Get your own PRINGLES, I love them so much, I want the whole can”. Of course while holding up the can of Pringles with the logo showing so we can see them.

As the World Turns did it too but not as much as Guiding Light.  They would say at the Thanksgiving table “Is that a BUTTERBALL TURKEY”,  while zooming in on a perfectly cooked turkey on the table…”BUTTERBALL TURKEYS are the best!!”

Ha Ha!!

Having product placements sitting around in Soap Operas is nothing new…it’s been like that since the beginning of TV Soaps.  Most of the time, the Dawn is just sitting on the counter, plainly in view or the Huggies are sitting out in view in the nursery…

But when they TALK about them it is kind of funny and makes me actually giggle out loud.

Case in point….the new soap opera “Beyond the Gates”, which I really enjoying by the way.

They have FEBREEZE as one of their products.  One of the characters, Nichole, is always spraying it and then smelling the room….with a resounding “Aaaahh”

Well, on Monday’s episode is was like they had a case of the PRINGLES.

While setting up for her 20+ something daughter’s birthday party.

Nicole: (Handing can to mom) “Can you do me a favor and spray the FEBREEEEZZEE? It always makes the house smell so fresh and welcoming for a parties”

Anita/Mom: “You stole that trick from me?” (Wagging finger in a teasing way)

Nicole: “I learned from the best”

Anita/Mom: (Takes a deep long look at the can of Febreeze) “FEBREEZE REFRESH & ENERGIZE, I don’t know that scent” (Sprays Febreeze and then walks into the spray while appearing to sniff)…

“Oooh, that is nice!” (Proceeds to walk around the room spraying the Febreeze)

Nicole: “Right?, I hope Kat enjoys herself…….(gets can from mom)

Mom: (Handing Febreeze back to Nicole)

Nicole: (Taking can from mom)…”She will appreciate this too…Kat insist on it, she says you got to have the Febreeze to (shakes shoulders in a dancing way and in a sing song voice) to set the vibe”

Another show that does this EVERY WEEK is “The Rookie” - every single week there is some throw down to AMAZON PRIME” - sometimes they are just getting a package delivered and say “Yes, my Amazon Prime delivery arrived”.  Sometimes there are just Amazon boxes in the background clearly in view.

This week, John said he threw away Bailey’s mouthpiece and cleats to keep her competing against him in a football game, so after John leaves the room, Bailey picks up her cell phone

Bailey (looking and touching phone): “Amazon Prime…Gloves, belts, cleats…add to cart. Oh, those boots are kind of cute…two for one face sheet masks? Same day delivery? Yes, please! And Purchased!  Flag football is saved”

The TV Show “Ghosts” is also a big fan of Amazon Prime…they have boxes all about and often are getting deliveries

By the way…no one calls it “Amazon Prime”…we all just say “Amazon”

Matlock promotes Apple products but don’t usually shout out the product name.

Will Trent is a fan of Uber and Converse, but you kind of have to mention Uber to promote it.

What other shows have you seen that are very blatant with their product placement?  

Project Life - March 2025

I can’t believe we are 1/4th of the way through the year! There was a lot of happenings in March, I had a visit with my mom, got to see my Aunt Betty and the best part, I went to Las Vegas with my friend and we saw Donny’s show 3 times, he invited us to a pizza party after one of the shows, his son and wife were there one  night and I got to meet Ann Moses of Tiger Beat fame!

The traveling and walking around is a little tougher than it was over 15 years ago when we first went to Las Vegas, but honestly, I am totally ready to go back!! We had a great time, as always!

 

Road Trip Saturday - Stop 2 - McDonough, Georgia

As mentioned in my last post, last Saturday I took a beautiful drive through middle Georgia.  I haven't spent a lot of time in middle Georgia. Northern Georgia is so beautiful, but middle Georgia is equally perfect.

Stop #2 - Henry County.  The county seat is McDonough.  It's pronounced Mick - Don - Ah.

Henry County was named for Patrick Henry.  You know, the "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" Patrick Henry.  If you don't know much about him, you should read up on him.  He did so much to form our country.

The courthouse even has a great statue of him.  I like that they have a statue of him, instead of a confederate soldier, since the county is his namesake.

Across from the courthouse is the C.O. Polk Interactive Museum.  I wanted to visit it, but as mentioned before, most little museums are closed on the weekend (again, so weird).  But I later discovered that this museum shut down during the COVID pandemic in 2020 and unfortunately, has never reopened.  That's a shame because its an interactive museum that shows the history of Henry County.

There is an old theater on the town square too.  The Clay Plaza building on the McDonough Square is rumored to be one of the most haunted in Henry County.

Once a movie theater from the 1940's through the 1960's, this building was owned by Ernest Paris Clay who was a spirited fellow with a fascination for the paranormal. He even told his daughter that when he died, he would try to come back to visit her.

Since his death, there have been strange sounds at night, including footsteps going up and down the hallways. The noises are most prominent in the area that was once the projection room, where Mr. Clay spent a great deal of time.

Coincidentally, the last movie to play at the theater was "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" starring Don Knotts.

I couldn't find out if it is still in use today. When I was there, there seemed to be some activity going on. People were walking up the side stairs and going in there.

I love the old gas station in town that is now a welcome center.

As mentioned, unlike some other Georgia towns, there is not a confederate statue.  I did discover a place in the center of the town square surrounded by flags and later discovered that a confederate monument once stood here.  I think the could do more with it, like put a fountain there or something.

I did find a photo online from 2007, when some renovations were going on at the courthouse, that shows there was once a monument here. Apparently, it was erected in 1910, where it stood for 110 years and was removed in July 2020, after 14,000 people signed a petition to have it removed.

I wonder what they do with monuments like that when they remove them?  Are they broken up, are they stored somewhere? Like what do they do with them.  I'm just curious.

There is a very cool time capsule in the town square too.  It was placed there in 1971, but didn't indicate when the capsule should be opened.  Most time capsules I have seen indicate when it is supposed to be opened, typically some anniversary date of the town.  I wonder what's in it?

Near the town square are some beautiful homes and there are many throughout McDonough. Can you imagine living in such a glorious home? How beautiful!!

Now onto the main reason for the trip...the COURTHOUSE.  Built in 1897, and just like the Clayton County Courthouse, it is Romanesque Revival and also designed by James Wingfield (J.W.) Golucke, (1857-1907) who designed 14 Georgia County Courthouses (plus 5 additional ones with a partner), 3 Alabama County Courthouses, & 3 Georgia County jails.  Boy, he was a busy fella!! He died at the young age of 50...just imagine what other designs he could have made had he lived longer.

Road Trip Saturday - Stop 1 - Jonesboro, Georgia

I've been on a personal quest.  I'm going to every county in Georgia to take a picture of their courthouse.  Now, some counties have a new courthouse and a historic courthouse.  Those counties that have both, use the historic courthouse for other county duties, or they've turned it into a museum or welcome center.  But, surprisingly, many of the historic courthouses are still being used primarily as the main and only courthouse for the county.

In the case where there are both, I'm only interested in the historic courthouse.  So those are the ones I photograph.

I often get asked, "Why do you want to take pictures of them, what are you going to do with them?"  Do I have to have a reason other than the fact that I appreciate the architecture and the history of them? I love riding through the backroad of Georgia - its like one of my favorite things in the world! I get to see so many beautiful old homes, old buildings, gorgeous lakes, rivers and trees.  I love our state and its history. I read ever history marker that I can safely stop at and read.

Unfortunately, the only day that is best for taking courthouse photos is Saturday.  Sunday, I have church and Monday - Friday, the courthouses and town squares are busy and surrounded by cars and people.  But on Saturday, you can pull right up front and park and take all the time you want just walking around the courthouse grounds without having to pay to park or having a bunch of cars or people in your shot.

Also, unfortunately, I only do this on a pretty and nice day.  I don't want gray skies in my photos, I only want blue skies and preferably on the days where there are a lot of white puffy clouds (but that is more likely in the fall).  SO....because it has been so cold and gray, It has been several months since I've been able to get out.  The summer was also a bit hard because it was hot as blue blazes and I find it difficult to walk around and read all the history and explore the town, when its too hot to walk around.

Georgia has 159 counties, the 2nd most counties of any state in the country.  Texas has 257 but is 4 1/2 times larger than Georgia.  So, considering how small GA is compared to TX, having only 58 less counties is saying that Georgia has a LOT of counties!!

This past Saturday was PERFECT, and I mean PERFECT weather for riding around and taking courthouse photos.  I managed to go to 7 different counties.  I would have preferred to linger a bit longer in the last town but there was a car show and arts festival going on.  That too can be a problem on Saturday, especially in the fall where festivals tend to be around the courthouse and center of town.

Therefore, I know, it is best to head out early...plus, when the sun gets to high in the sky, the photos don't turn out as well.

So...my first county stop this weekend, was in Clayton County, just south of Atlanta.  I did get a later start than expected because as I was leaving, I discovered I had a nail in my tire, so had to get that fixed first.  So, I was about 2 1/2 hours later getting to the Clayton County Courthouse in Jonesboro than I planned.

Like many towns, Jonesboro has a nice mural painted on the side of an old gas station to welcome you.

Also, like many Georgia towns, a railroad track runs right through the middle of town.  The old railroad depot in Jonesboro has been converted to the Road to Tara Museum.  If you read "Gone with the Wind", you'll know that a large part of the story, takes place at the fictional plantation home of Tara, which is supposed to be locate 5 miles outside of Jonesboro. 5 miles was not a short journey in the mid 1800s.

I didn't go to the museum.  Do you want to know why?  Oddly, so many tourist museums in Georgia towns are closed on the weekend.  Does that make sense?  It's actually very common for these types of museums to only be open during the week, generally only a few days of the week.  The Road to Tara Museum is no exception. It is only open Monday - Friday from 10am - 4pm.  I suppose it is just as well.  It will give me a reason to come back and plus I don't really have time to get to see all the counties I would like in a day, if I stop at EVERY museum and explore.  I just add them on my "Return Trip To Do List"

In all cases that I have seen, all Georgia historic courthouses have a couple of things in common.

1) They have memorials to War Veterans and often police officers.

2) They often have a Civil War soldier memorial.  

This courthouse, had the war veteran's memorial, but did not have a statue.  It may have had one at one point, but many of the confederate statues have been removed.  I'm surprised when I do find some that still remain. 

I'm not honestly sure how I feel about the remove of the confederate statues.  I think they are amazing works of art and while I don't agree with honoring the "old south" or glorifying it.  I just see it as history.  I think it is important to have our history displayed, good or bad.  It's important to remember it. I guess others see it differently though.  They believe these statues are "honoring" the confederacy.  I don't see it that way...but if I were a different race, who knows how I would think?

At any rate...Jonesboro didn't have a confederate statue.  They do, however, have the Patrick R. Cleburn Confederate Cemetery. Patrick Cleburn, born in Ireland in 1828, was a Senior Confederate Officer, who in 1864 called together the leadership of the Army of Tennesse and put forth the proposal to emancipate slaves.  He wasn't a supporter of slavery but rather fought for the south due to his love of the land and the people.  

Anyway...onto the courthouse.  

Like many, or rather most, courthouses in Georgia...the original ones were lost during the Civil War and Sherman's army burning them to the ground.

I thought the current one in use, built in 1898 was the only one still standing.  But later I found out that the 2nd courthouse, pictured below, was built in1869 and used until 1898.  At that time, it became a Masonic lodge and is still used as one today.  So...I didn't know that and therefore didn't visit it or get a photo (the photo below was not take by me)

The current, and 3rd courthouse, which I did visit and photograph, was built in 1898 and had an addition added in 1962.

The Romanesque Revival structure was designed by architect J.W. Golucke.  Romanesque Revival courthouses are quite common in Georgia.

On my way out of town, I drove past Stately Oaks, a 1839 Greek Revival Antebellum home.  Once again, I could not stop for a tour.  They were surprisingly, open on Saturday but they didn't open until noon, and I didn't want to wait around for 90 minutes.  Again, it just gives me a reason to come back. PS: Open /Friday - Saturday only, 12pm - 4pm and it takes about 2 hours to visit the home, grounds and other buildings on the property.

I'm looking forward to a return visit so I can tour the home and property.  Many people think "Tara" was based on this house but it wasn't.  It was actually long thought that Tara was based on the Fitzgerald House, which sadly the remains were destroyed by a tornado.

I saw Shen Yun and Mama Mia, my sister and I took another painting class (so fun!), my great Aunt passed away (last one of that generation) and a visit to JoAnn - before they close :(
 

New Soap Opera - Beyond the Gates

Who else is super excited about the new CBS Soap Opera - "Beyond the Gates"

I for one am so excited!!

First of all, it has a couple of "As the World Turns" vets on it...Tamara Tunie, who played Jessica Griffin Harris and Cady McClain, who played Rosanna Cabot and Jon Lindstrom, who played Craig Montgomery.  

Guiding Light alumni, Karla Moseley, who played Christina Moore, is also in the new cast. 

The soap also has Clifton Davis!  Clifton Davis, y'all!!  Many know him from sitcoms like "Amen" and "That's My Mama" but did you know he wrote the Jackson 5's hit "Never Can Say Goodbye" He's starred in many Broadway shows and he's even a Baptist Minister.  How awesome is that?

I sure miss "As the World Turns" and especially "Guiding Light' and let's face it, CBS soaps are the best! I'm just so happy to see a new daytime soap opera hit the airwaves! I hope it will revive the soap opera comeback!  

I'm so excited and looking forward to Monday, February 24th at 2pm EST (the former ATWT spot) to watch "Beyond the Gates"

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry - Movie Review

 

I was browsing Netflix and looking for a movie.  It's so hard to find movies that don't have a lot of violence, sex or foul language. I'm not a prude but sometimes I just want a good, more wholesome movie.  It's hard to find adult movies like this but luckily I found "The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry"

The 2022 movie is based off the novel by Gabrielle Zevin.  I didn't read the book but I think I would have enjoyed it.  

The film begins with A.J. Fikry (wonderfully played by Kunal Nayyar, who you might know as Raj from The Big Bang Theory), a reclusive and grumpy bookstore owner on Alice Island (filmed at Cape Code, Massachusetts).  Amelia Loman (played by Lucy Hale who you might know as Katy Keene from Riverdale) is a book sales representative who travels to his bookstore from her home in Rhode Island.  His wife had passed away a couple of years ago and he just seems to have no interest in anything.  She tries to sell him some books to put in his store, one book in particular she mentions is "The Late Bloomer" about an elderly couple that finds love at an old age.  Amelia (aka: Amy) believes it to be a beautiful memoir but she can't find any buyers interested in the book at all and that book eventually becomes a flop.

That evening, A.J. pulls his prized guarded copy of Tamerlane (a rare collection of Edgar Allen Poe poems) out to view it, but he eventually passes out from too much drinking after wallering in self-pity all night.

When he awakens, he see the mess he made the night before has been cleaned up and someone has stolen his copy of Tamerlane, which he merely had for investment purposes and had hoped to sell it one day so he could retire from the bookstore.  He reports the stolen book to his friend Officer Lambiase, who takes the info but they don't do much to find the book, knowing it will be pretty difficult to track down.

A.J. also has a writer friend named Daniel (Scott Foley, well known for Felicity), who is married to Ismay (Christina Hendricks from Mad Men & Good Girls). If I recall correctly, Ismay was A.J.'s sister-in-law (his late wife's sister).

One day, a young girl comes in holding a 2-year-old and asks for book and when A.J. goes to get it, he finds she has left and left the little girl behind for him to care for.  A.J. falls for the cute little girl and eventually adopts her.  Ismay, for some reason, doesn't seem especially happy about this but she supports her friend.

About 4 years later, we see that Amy has still been making regular trips to Alice Island and has gotten to know A.J. and the child (Maya).  Maya is very fond of Amy.  After one visit, A.J stumbles upon "The Late Bloomer" that Amy recommended when they first met.  He reads it in one evening and ends us crying like baby.  He then contacts Amy and want to take her to lunch and discuss it.

Eventually a friendship and then romance develops and the movie continues over the next 10 year or so as we see the characters deal with loss and growth.  

It was a very sweet movie and perfect to watch on a nice rainy day.  I won't tell more so as not to give the story away.  

I do have one negative thing to say and it wasn't about the movie per se, but more about the set of the movie.  First, it takes place in the northeastern US on Alice Island (Cape Code stood in for the Island).  Now I have never been to Cape Cod (although I want to so much), but I hear that although they are not native to Cape Cod, hydrangeas are quite popular and well known and practically associated with the island.  Over 155 varieties grow there!

Hydrangea season on the island is June - August (warm months, of course).  In the movie however, they were blooming all throughout the entire movie.  It was nuts, characters were walking around with coats, heavy sweaters and hats, yet those flowers were in full bloom...all...the...time! Seriously?  I don't know why it bothered me but it kind of did.  There is one scene where they are closing down the bookstore and poof all the hydrangea bushes are mysteriously gone but in the next scene, when the bookstore is re-opened, poof full bloom again.  Small little vent, but still... :)

Anyway, despite the flowers (ha ha), I recommend this movie - very sweet!
