National Safe Place - Sign Change

National Safe Place is a wonderful organization...When kids and teens find themselves in crisis or need a place to stay, they should know how and where to get help. Young people deserve safety and shelter and unfortunately, some kids don't have either.  But thanks to Safe Place, help for teens is never too far away.

National Safe Place is an outreach program designed to provide access to immediate help and safety for all youth in crisis.

One such sponsor of Safe Place in my are is QuikTrip.  I love, love, love, love, love QT !!!  Did I mention I love QT.  Not only do they have the best gas prices in town, they have good food and the BEST ICED TEA ever!  In addition to all that - they support Safe Place.

Well......

One day my sis and I noticed the Safe Place sign hanging up outside QT

Now....I was thinking this but didn't say anything but apparently my sister was thinking the exact same thing and she said "I don't know about you...but that doesn't look safe to me - looks like someone is molesting that child"  We had a good laugh about it because that is exactly what we thought it looked like.  We said we guess they are suppose to look like they are hugging the child or just putting their arms around the child in a protective way but it seriously looks like they are grabbing the kid's ta-tas.  Which to us, did not imply "Safety"

Well...we must not have been the only people that thought this.  Today when I stopped by QT for the BEST ICED TEA ever, I notice the sign is different now.

Ahh - much better - shows a house - implies we can find a safe home for you.  I also see when you go to their website, that this is their logo and all over their website - no indication of the previous molester-ish sign.  Good for you Safe Place for your service and for changing your sign.  I like it now !  Keep up the good work!

March 17th - 23rd is National Safe Place week - if you would like to make a donation this cause, please go to http://nationalsafeplace.org/ and click "Donate Now" - no donation is too small - you could be helping a kid you know.

Also...support your local QT and get some of the BEST ICED TEA ever while you are there !

Sky Scarf - 2013 Year-Long Knitting Project

this past autumn sometime, while browsing Pinterest, I stumbled upon this conceptual knitting project called a "Sky Scarf" - basically, you knit two rows a day based on the color of the sky - HOW NEAT !
You knit every day for a year and at the end of the year, you have a scarf (approx 5 feet long depending on the yarn & needles used) and a reminder of what the weather was like that year.

I made a mental note to myself that I would start one January 1st and I did !!  It is going to take me all year to knit it of course (since I only knit 2 rows a day).  The reason I knit 2 rows instead of one is because I carry the yarn up the side and so I need to knit down a row and then it the row back so the yarn all ends up on the same side.

So based on what others have used, I decided to make it with Knit Picks Pallette Yarn.  I actually wanted to use Herrschner's 2-Ply Afghan Yarn but they were out of 2 of the colors I needed and they noted that they wouldn't have in stock until March (although I see now that both colors are currently in stock).  I didn't want to wait until March to start my scarf - I wanted to start on January 1st by golly ! So Knit Picks Pallette Yarn won the battle and I ordered the following:

1 skein of Ash (Dark Grey) for rainy days
1 skein of Mist (Light Grey) for overcast days
1 skein of White for snowy days (haha - probably won't get used but you never know)
2 skeins of Sky (Light Blue) for clear days
2 skeins of Pool (Dark Blue) for bright, sunny days

You can tell from the photo that I got the yarn right around Christmas time (note the tablecloth).  I wound the skeins into balls and stored them in my project suitcase.  How cute is this little suitcase?  I got it at Michaels and it was on sale for 40% off.  It has a Victorian Parisian theme on the outside.

On January 1st, I started my scarf and so far, I've knitted daily.  I don't have a current photo but here is one I took at the end of January:

Look at all the GREY !!!  Boy we had a lot of rain and overcast days in January !  I ordered twice as much blue as I did grey and now I'm thinking I should have ordered the opposite - well - we shall see.... you can see the first day of the month is dark grey (raining) and the last day is dark grey (raining).  It should be interesting to see how it turns out.

I am using Size 4 Takumi Knitting Needles and I cast on 34 stitches. I chose 34 in honor of my dad, who was born in 1934.  That way he can kind of be a part of my scarf.

I did decide later that I wanted to put a "break" of some kind in between months so I chose yellow (to represent the sun) and I will put yellow in between each month.  I'm not sure if I will post an update each month but we'll see how the year progresses.

I have SO MANY projects I want to do but this is an easy one - takes me about 3 minutes a day.
