2012 Movies I've Seen - Complete list

Listing of movies I've seen in 2012 (does not include TV movies or movies I've re-watched)
A
indicates my favorite for the month.
December 2012
Out of Time
- Justin Timberlake - kind of futuristic - good !

My Fair Lady - okay, I know this is a old movie but I have never watched it until now.  I know it won 8 Oscars and 3 Golden Globes, but I found it long, boring & a bit irratating. Rex Harrison can not sing...he talks through his "songs". Besides Audrey Hepburn wasn't even singing - Marni Nixon was! Marni was quite pretty - they should have just cast her for the part!
The Hobbit - what can I say - I have waited 2 years for this movie and it did not disappoint!
New Year's Eve - which I watched on 12/31/2012 - great cast and I liked it better than Valentine's Day
November 2012
Corpse Bride
- I love Tim Burton movies and have always wanted to see this - I can't believe it took me so long to finally seeing it - of course I loved it.  He is such a genius when it comes to animation!
Tower Heist - pretty good
We Bought a Zoo - really good family movie
Game Change - very good - made for HBO movie but really made feel good that I voted the way I did in 2008.
Breaking Dawn Part 2 - great action scene. Great twist
October 2012
Lord of the Flies
- staring a very young Balthazar Getty (only 14 years old) and James Dale (about 12 years old at the time) - pretty well acted for a bunch of young boys.

Deliver Us From Eva - I really liked this movie.  It was a take off of Taming of the Shrew
Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked - what can I say, it has singing chipmunks, it has to be pretty good.
Hotel Transylvania - Pretty darned funny with Adam Sandler as the voice of Dracula - cute story
The Girl - made for HBO about Alfred Hitcock's odd facination with Tippi Hedren - the acting was incredible and from what I've read the story is pretty much the truth - I felt so bad for Tippi - he was not such a nice fella - I wonder if he was just like that with her or with other leading ladies too.  I hope both actors get nominated for an Emmy and/or ACE award.
A Thousand Words - Eddie Murphy - I still love Eddie - the movie was good but not as good as I was expecting.
September 2012
The Aviator - as I said last month - Leonard DiCaprio is AMAZING!!!
Hop - some funny lines but I kept falling asleep - took me 3 viewings to finish it all.
Air Force One - can't believe I never watched this before - really good !
Ghost Son - ugh- stupid and terrible acting - not sure why I sat through it.
Murder on the 13th Floor - pretty good, but made me want to sort of have an apt like they had
Orphan - good thriller about a bad girl but had a strange twist that left me feeling a bit weirded out.

Sexting in Suburbia - better than the title sounds
Last Hours in Suburbia - could have been good - not the best acting in the world but the story-line got a bit old and seemed to drag.

August 2012
Madea's Witness Protection - I love Tyler Perry, he is so stinking cute!
What's Your Number - Anna Faris movie, kind of cute.
Bambi II - I didn't know there was a Bambi II, just happened to catch it on TV - very cute!
J.Edgar - great film! Leonard DiCaprio is such and AMAZING actor!
Hope Springs - I love, love, love Meryl Streep !!!
No Time for Sargents -  I have never seen the whole movie before - too funny !!
Soul Surfer - GREAT movie - it is rare to find movies that the whole family can enjoy
July 2012
Crazy, Stupid, Love - Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone - what's not to like ?  Cute movie.
Dolphin Tale - A true story - sweet - great family movie (which sadly you don't see too much of anymore)
It's Kind of a Funny Story - from Focus films so I knew I'd like it.  Very good story - I really enjoyed it.
Ted - Oh my goodness - so hilarious !! I laughed so much !!
Unstoppable - Denzel Washington; Chris Pine - very intense - very good.
Moonrise Kingdom - charming, sweet & kind of quirky but I really liked it. Great cast.
The Big Year - lots of big names but never heard of it before - was just okay - middle of the road for me.

June 2012
Mr. Popper's Penguins - pretty cute, would have been better without the poop jokes but I am sure it made the kids laugh.
Rock of Ages - just when I think I can't love Tom Cruise anymore, here he comes as Stacee Jaxx
Hangover II - pretty funny-like the first one but set it Bancock
Kung Fu Panda II - cute, they set it up for a part III right at the end.
Brave - the latest Disney/Pixar creations - wonderful, of course !

Magic Mike - great dancing, not so great acting.
May 2012
Monte Carlo - pretty cute teen movie with a Prince & the Pauper theme.
Going the Distance - Drew Barrymore flick - was ok but not her best film by any means
The Kids are Alright - pretty good story but too much unnecessary nudity
One Day - long love story, the finally get together and then tragedy strikes
Paul - alien movie where Blythe Danner drops the f-bomb, shows you how good it was - NOT !
Dark Shadows - way better than I thought it would be based on the reviews I'd heard - I really liked it.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - great legendary British actors in this movie, interesting to see Indian culture.

April 2012
Eat, Pray, Love - better than I thought it would be.
Horrible Bosses - was okay, didn't hate it, didn't love it - but did not like Jennifer Aniston's character at all
Chimpanzee - so sweet, so amazing, incredible photography - wow !
Water for Elephants - the book was a bit slow to me, so was the movie - good acting though.
Pirates - Band of Misfits (3D) - funny, cute story - I love 3D
Larry Crowne - Tom Hanks/Julie Roberts.  I heard a lot of bad reviews for this when it first came out but I decided to watch it and I liked it.

March 2012
The Way - staring Martin Sheen, about a man taking over a pilgrimage for his son, pretty good
Legally Blond 2 - I love Reese Witherspoon but ... the first Legally Blond was great, the didn't need #2
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - very funny movie - romance but also drama - I loved it.
Cedar Rapids - watched on HBO, was just okay
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son - also on HBO - also just okay
Bridemaids - not as crude as I thought it was going to be (really only a couple of crude scenes), it was a pretty good story but not sure what the big hoopla was about it.  Also don't know why Melissa McCarthy was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, she did a fine job but she wasn't any more special then the other girls in it.
Mars is for Moms - the animation took a while to get use to - liked the mom storyline but the movie was too long and didn't get to the point until the very end.

February 2012
Extremely Loud and Incredible Close - good acting, had a lot of narration, a little upsetting
Warhorse - Epic storytelling in classic Steven Spielberg fashion - I loved it
Moneyball - true story - good but kind of slow for me
Ides of March - very good, incredible to know stuff like that (or worse) goes on in real life.
Tree of Life - very artsy movie that was HORRIBLE
Midnight in Paris - sweet, charming and romantic.

January 2012
Something Borrowed - good story but moved a little slow I thought
Mean Girls - really liked it
Hall Pass - just okay - was crude and predictable
Twilight - Breaking Dawn Part I - good, a little cheesy when the werewolves talked to each other though
Insidious - not as scary as I thought it would be but was creepy and spooky without gore
The Artist - I LOVED this movie - LOVED it !!    ❤ ❤ ❤
The Karate Kid (the newer one with Jaden Smith) - never saw it before, they should have named it The Kung-Fu Kid, I wonder why they didn't?
The Descendants - good movie, good acting, beautiful location

Funny Friday - The Mayan Calendar

Seems like we are all still here and Doomsday didn't happen after all - surprise, surprise !!

I think people made way too much of a big deal about the so-called-end-of-the-world Mayan Calendar.

I think this explains the real reason their calendar ended on December 21, 2012

Funny Friday - uh Monday - Jingle Bells

Christmas Wreath

One day while on Facebook, I saw a post by Drew Emborsky, also known as The Crochet Dude.
He posted a link to a beautiful wreath on MemeRose.  I just fell in love with it.  I pinned it to my crochet board on Pinterest because I knew I wanted to make it (I want to make everything I pin, but let's face it - I would need several lifetimes to do that-LOL!!)

So...I sat on it a few weeks, trying to decide what colors to make and then a little light bulb went off over my head. Ding...Ding...Ding....(actually that is a bell - haha, I don't think light bulbs go "ding, ding, ding")

I can make it Christmas colors and make a Christmas wreath - hello !!!

So...even though I was getting ready to head out of town and knew I wouldn't have time to work on it...I went to Michael's in search of some Vanna's Choice and I actually had the colors I wanted picked out except for one, I just couldn't find the right shade.  So I thought...let me check the Impeccable Yarn to see if they have it..well, it was a little cheaper since it was on sale, and the shades were almost identical so I ended up getting 5 skeins.

Soft Rose, Claret, Fern, Forest and White (I got the bigger sized skein in white but the smaller one would have been plenty - I had a ton of left over yarn, but I will use them for something else...(a tree skirt comes to mind)

So while at Michael's I wanted to get a 12 inch styrofoam wreath, but they only had it in green and I didn't want the green to peek through so I just got the bigger 16 inch in white.

I was out of town, A LOT and very busy at work so still didn't get to start on it.  Plus I wanted to finish my baby cardigan first.

I took the yarn with me when I went to visit my mom for Thanksgiving and also purchase a new hook from the Crochet Dude's line (I figured since he first inspired me to make this, then the least I could do was to try out one of his hooks).  Let me just tell you that I LOVE this hook - it is so comfortable.

See how it has the rubberized (and soft) handle.  I loved it so much that even though I have a complete set of Boye hooks, which I love, I immediately added a whole collection of these to my Amazon Wish List.

Although the photo above is an H hook, I actually used a G hook.  Over Thanksgiving I determined that I think I need 24 squares. I used THIS GRANNY SQUARE Pattern. I only did the first 3 rounds though.  I made 18 of the squares while visiting but then had to return home and as usual, got wrapped up in work but I finally finished the other 6 squares this week.  I'm very happy with the squares...very pretty.

So I started sewing the squares together (not my favorite part, I must admit)

Then I sewed the squared together around the wreath form and TA - DA !!!  Christmas Wreath !!!
I'm very happy with it.

Whatever happened to Ralphie ???

I remember Thanksgiving weekend in 1983, my best friend and I wanted to get in the holiday spirit and went to see a new Christmas movie called "A Christmas Story"....we thought it was hilarious - in fact, we even went back to the theater to see it again about a week later. We loved it and had no idea at the time that it would one day be considered a "classic" Christmas movie.

Of course we could related to the Christmas wishes of a cute little boy named "Ralphie" - played by Peter Billingsley.  How cute was he ?  I thought he had the bluest eyes !

We both thought - what an incredible actor to be just a kid !  He did a great job and pretty much carried the whole movie.  (All the actors were great but let's face it - it was all about "Ralphie")

That movie wasn't what you would call a blockbuster at the time, in fact it only earned about $ 2 million on its opening weekend but now, every Christmas you can catch it on TBS for 24 straight hours!  It is great and I think it is probably my mom's favorite Christmas movie.

Have you ever wondered what that cute little boy grew up to look like as an adult ?  Well, wonder no more...here he is....

Dag - gum...he is still cute - look at those beautiful blue eyes still sparkling...

I don't know about you but I think he aged VERY well.  My, my, my !!!

Completed Baby Cardigan (and Harajuku Mini)

Remember back in August when I started this cute vintage crochet baby cardigan because my niece was pregnant.  Well.. I made a pretty good bit of progress and then...well....let's just say, work, responsibilities, travel, etc.  all got in the way so the project set about half-way completed until the first part of November.

Well...my great niece decided to surprise us and come about 2 1/2 weeks early - she is ADORABLE of course.  I would love to post her photo here but don't want to unless I talk to my niece and her hubby first.  I am sure it would be okay but I wouldn't want someone posting my baby's picture without checking with me first.

Any way...they live in New Zealand - luckily my sister-in-law went over early.  She was going to be there for the baby shower and help my niece get ready but she was only there about 24 hours and little Isobel decided to make her appearance.  Glad she waited on her grand-mama to get there.

My brother isn't going until December 16th (though Isobel would only be 2 weeks only but she will instead be about 5 weeks).  He is taking my cardigan and a few other little outfits I bought.

Now you HAVE to know my niece.  She loves, loves, loves, funky clothes.  She lived in Japan for almost 6 years and all her non-work clothes (aka business suits) are Harajuku clothes, so I was thrilled when I found these Harajuku Minis at Target.  I know my niece will LOVE them (and she will also wish they made them in her size).

Outfit One (front and back).  Look how cute the little ruffles are:

Outfit Two

She is going to love the little tutu and leg warmers

Now onto the cardigan.  Here it is. . .  along with a cute little baby hat I whipped up quickly (the pattern includes a bonnet but I don't think babies wear bonnets much these days so I made a hat instead.

I am really happy with the final result, including the tiny watermelon buttons.  I am pretty sure it will fit her (may be a little big) but I want at least 1 photo with her wearing it.  My niece is a knitter so I think she will appreciate the work that went into it.

Here is the PATTERN for the cardigan.  Here is the PATTERN for the hat (I just freeformed the shell border on the hat)

Sexting in Suburbia - better than the title sounds
Last Hours in Suburbia - could have been good - not the best acting in the world but the story-line got a bit old and seemed to drag.

Andy Williams Tribute by Donny Osmond

Andy Williams, passed away yesterday - he was such an amazing singer - had one of the smoothest voices I have ever heard.

I will always love him not only because of his amazing talent but also because he was responsible for introducing America to the famous Osmond family.

The Osmonds always remained closed to Andy and in fact, Jimmy, Jay and Merrill were scheduled to perform with Andy next week in Branson for his 75th Anniversary in show business.  They are still going to perform in Branson to pay tribute to him.

Donny & Marie are currently performing at the Flamingo in Las Vegas, NV and last night, Donny paid tribute to Andy Williams in the best way he knows how...by singing Moon River.

Donny's voice is AMAZING and he really does this song justice.  I hope he considers adding it to their show, it would be such a nice tribute to Andy Williams.

Extreme Sporting - A Family Affair

This was my "What the heck?" moment today....

I was checking e-Bay for "Family Affair" - the TV Show of course and this came up.....

Gee, there is nothing more special then spending family time teaching your 5 year old "Extreme" hunting and killing animals with a shotgun.  What a way to bond - such a true "Family Affair"

Of course my reaction when I saw this little DVD was more like this:

Knitting Eyes - What are they looking at ?

When browsing knitting patterns, I see such a common occurrence in the photos, that I decided I needed to comment on it.  I just find it so amusing.

I can't be the only knitter/crocheter that notices this....

Why do SO MANY ladies feel they have to look up or off in the distance when photographing their beautifully made items?

Now I do not know any of these ladies and I actually bow down to their knitting talent. Please do not think I am mocking them - because I am NOT - it is just an observation...about photography.

I was admiring this lovely green sweater on someone's blog I believe and thought what is she looking at?  Why doesn't she look at the camera.

Then I realized - it isn't just her - it seems so many people do this.  Take this lady for example...

Also a beautiful sweater, also looking off in the distance.  Do they get this idea from knitting magazines?
Perhaps they do.

Sometimes I think they look down to show the detail in the pattern, especially for hats.

But then I realize - does looking down really show that much more detail ?  What about this one...

or this one?

What are they looking at?

Even those that wear scarves are prone to look anywhere but the camera

All the scarves are beautiful but what are they looking at ?  Even girls with gloves get into the action.

Isn't that last blue set amazing?? Look at that cable work - I'm so jealous - I LOVE that hat!

Heck...even mannequins participate in this sport of looking away from the camera

All this just reminds me of a family from the late 1960s/early 1970s

Fictional Knitters

As you know, I am a knitter and crocheter (is that how you spell it?)
When you knit and crochet, you are always spotting beautiful handiwork in movies and TV - my friends just roll their eyes when I poke them and say "Ooooh, look at that pretty afghan" or "Hmmm, I wonder if I can find the pattern for that hat on Ravelry?"

Well, besides noticing beautiful handiwork, you also notice the characters that knit or crochet. I've mention before that Barney Fife knits and crochets (he sews too)

Did you know that Hawkeye from M*A*S*H knits? Neither did I !

Of course most people remember that Morticia from the Addams Family is a knitter.

But did you know that she taught her butler, Lurch, to knit too ?

That first famous female TV duo were also knitters - look at Lucy and Ethel go !

It is always especially cool when we catch the men knitting...take Cary Grant's character for instance in "Mr. Lucky"

One of my fave episodes of Grey's Anatomy was when Izzie was trying to knit Denny a sweater and was horrible at it so Meredith took over (look at the size of the HUGE knitting needles)

I guess Grey's Anatomy forgot that Izzie couldn't knit because later when she was a patient, she passed the time by....yep, you guessed it, knitting

Of course Katherine Heigl is a knitter in real life - she is even producing and starring in an HBO movie that centers around knitting.

Heck, even animated characters sometimes like to get in on the action. . .

Now....you don't see crochet as much in the movies but....thanks to Miss Melanie from Gone With The Wind - we can see someone with a hook and yarn - yeah for Miss Melanie - she don't know nothing 'bout no knitting - but she knows about crochet.....

On a final note... I found one more fictional character that likes to knit...none other than 24's Jack Bauer.  Look at the gun cozy he is knitting - isn't it cute ?

Haha - okay - so that is is PROBABLY photo-shopped but I thought it was too funny not to include
